WCRD 2021: Cancer Research Works, Driving Progress Together

September 24 marks World Cancer Research Day (WCRD), an initiative promoted by 10+ organisations worldwide, including ESMO, aiming to foster awareness of the important role played by cancer research.

Cancer research is key to address global challenges. The first and more effective Covid-19 vaccine was quickly developed thanks to the mRNA technology previously established in cancer immunotherapy.

WCRD, 2021

One of the main challenges in the fight against cancer is further developing and boosting cancer research as an essential part of slowing the progression of the disease and further improving survival rates and quality of life for those affected.

“With new cancer cases expected to rise to over 30 million per year by 2040, it has never been so important to keep the pace of cancer research going” says Solange Peters, ESMO President. “ESMO strongly believes in the importance of connecting and engaging oncology stakeholders in #ONEoncologycommunity to foster global collaboration and advance cancer research.

Convening the oncology community to discuss the latest advances in cancer treatment, prevention and care, the annual ESMO Congress represents a good example of the commitment of the Society towards cancer research.

ESMO strives to disseminate high-quality science and to drive progress in the field by offering or facilitating a  wide range of services and activities, including - but not limited to - the ESMO journals and the Fellowships Programme. In addition, thanks to the work done by the ESMO Translational Research and Precision Medicine Working Group, the Society aims to promote high-quality translational research in oncology and to develop translational research-related content for ESMO’s educational programmes.
